The game is played on a chessboard square frame with 64 squares arranged in eight by eight grid. At first, each player (which controls the white pieces and the other control black pieces) controls sixteen pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. The object is to checkmate the opponent's king, by which the king is attacked immediately (in "check") and there is no way to remove it from attack on the next move.
